Light breaking in…

There’s been two days of rainbows this week already. The forecast had promised wintery rain and the weather delivered on it each morning, but each afternoon the stormy grey gradually peeled back revealing bright sunshine and a beautiful arching rainbow: Light breaking through winter rain.

Are you feeling ready for the light? More light? More warmth? I sure am.

The snow drops in our garden are pushing through like a promise and the sun is now lingering ever so slightly longer along the horizon. And I’m watching it all with joy, oh so ready for warmer brighter days.

Lent begins today. The word Lent means ‘the lengthening of Days’. It names the season of light breaking through after all the huddling cold winter weeks. Lent is a gradual path towards the warming long-light days of summer, through the bursting, budding, flowering life of spring. Lent is the path we walk, the season of stillness and reflection that leads us right up until Holy week and Easter.

I have a little gift for you as you step into this first day of Lent. It’s a map, of sorts. A storied map, leading you along a path through the Easter story all the way through to the Garden tomb.

It’s called Steeping in the Story of Grace‘, because that’s the invitation. To stop. To still. To steep in the story of Jesus’ walk towards His cross, towards our freedom. For this season of Lent.

It’s a guide through the Gospel stories as they tell their accounts of Jesus’ journey to His cross. And at the bottom of the map you will find two questions inviting you into deeper reflection (‘How does this story reveal God’s Heart?’ and‘How does it reveal ‘Humankind’s Frailty?’). Questions to journal, talk over with others or simply to sit with. You can take this journey with friends or family, talking it over as you go, or simply in your own quiet space.

I won’t be sending you letters every day this Lent as I did during Advent. However once a week I will send you a story (and audio) connected with the readings in the ‘Story of Grace’ map. And some other little encouragements along the way.

Enjoy the journey.

I’ll be in touch again soon,

Liz
